How does one “smile” in Kannada?

Filed under: Music — Porcupyn @ 12:12 am

Last week, for some reason, I needed (or wanted, or whatever!) to know the word for “smile” in Kannada, but could not think of it. Laugh I knew several words for, but not smile. So out came the Kannada-English dictionary, but obviously that did not help. Went online, and found one I liked – ‘kirunage’. I knew I had heard the word before and so fought to get it… I went kirunage … kirunage yembaa … and finally got it. Here is the official version. Today, this song is only as politically correct as its Hindi equivalent.

  1. 🙂

As all-encompassing a language is, it does fall short occasionally for the emotions you’d like to verbalize.

    Nutan’s so pretty!

  2. Rads:

The purpose of the example was to showcase (yeah, right!) my limited knowledge of Kannada, not Kannada’s limits. D.S. will be around shortly to give five synonyms for “smile.”🙂

Nutan – pretty yes, but no comparison to Sadhana.

  3. This post made me listen to all these beautiful songs yesterday night (started hopping from one to another on youtube):

    Tumhi Meri Manzil
    Saawan ka Mahina
    Dil Ki Nazar Se
    Lag Jaa Gale
    Satyam Shivam Sundaram

Yeh Kahan Aagaye Hum started dropping packets twice. So, I switched and listened to “Anisutide” twice!!!

Nutan is certainly one of my all time favorites. Extremely beautiful and a very talented actress (even though Shobhana Samarth claims that Tanuja is more natural). Hmmm, not bad from a guy who “doesn’t know” Hindi, huh?😉

    …and I have conveniently skipped SB’s comments above🙂

  4. well, I couldn’t resist not to comment on the last line in SB’s comment😉

Thank God, he did not make us all alike….IMO, Sadhana is absoutely no comparison to Nutan as far as beauty is concerned. “lOko bhinna ruchiH” and that’s a nice thing.

As for acting, Nutan wins hands down….I guess people are smart enough not to dispute that….lol

OK now, what does knowing Hindi have to do with the rest of this paragraph?🙂 I thought you had rested your case on the Hindi or not thingy. And if you did study the language, there is no reason for you not to know Hindi, is there?

“well, I couldn’t resist not to comment on the last line in SB’s comment”

That’s too many negatives. I don’t know whether the net result is positive or negative.😉

FYI, I really wanted for you to give some Kannada synonyms that are in “normal usage” for “smile”.

“… you have done justice to the song…good job”

Thank you ^ N🙂. At least I know enough Kannada to get by!
